have been watching my grand daughter show at a lot of shows lately. she learned at a camp that you shouldn't slap the lambs when trying to brace them. but watched texas best show series the other weekend and saw some really good kids getting their lambs to brace by slapping their backs and sides real hard. it seemed like they were already bracing them when they would just start slapping their rears or sides. these are also some of the kids that placed high. i just wonder what does that help? does it help them tighten up or why do they do that?? seems kind of mean. but seems like the ones who were doing that also were placing in the past few shows I have watched. can someone explain what that is for

Do that in front of a judge such as Josh Cody and you'll quickly get the evil eye. He doesn't like it and doesn't mind telling the kids not to do it.

I've never felt that it was necessary at home or the shows. A slight tap on the back is all mine ever need to tense up.

Most shows have some sort of rule about this, and that is the ring stewards job to step up and caution exhibitors about that. I have also seen judges put those kids at the bottom, and tell them that sort of behavior is unexceptable.Juts more ammunition for folks that do not understand showing anyway.

seen a few years back at a show a girl would slap the lamb hard she was lucky I wasn't judging that day.
bigiron59 I agree 100% we have to watch out for people filming from PETA all the time, just more fuel for them to get rid of shows.

I've seen a couple that don't slap... It's a full fist knuckles to the ribs.... A lil to much for me!

A little tap with your index and middle fingers over the hip works just fine..

Saw a judge literally kick a young man out of the ring for slugging his lamb. The crowd clapped and dad told him the judge was right.

Last year we had a kid so mad at his lamb he threw down his 4-H hat in the ring and climbed the fence and left his lamb, boy was his dad mad.

DonD1...GOOD! At my state fair, there was quite a bit. I will admit to doing little love taps on the dock if they aren't driving good, but it is a movement of my hand, not my entire arm and no noise comes from it. There were a few doing the knuckle sides and I was appalled.

One of my kids slapped her lamb in the ring this year because it wasn't walking. She was placed at the end of the class. People are watching these shows and the way we treat the animals gives an impression of the show and livestock industry. Better treat 'em right!
