We have a 110# pound lamb off grain with no temp. I will be giving Probios today. How much extra hay should we give him until he is back on grain? Will orchard grass be okay since we do not have any grass hay? We also have alfalfa but have read on this forum that grass hay is easier to digest.

Orchard grass is grass hay and will be perfect. I personally feed them all the hay they'll clean up. Hay is better than nothing to keep them from losing too much ground and it will help straighten out their rumen. You can give a handful of alfalfa as well with each feeding.

Thanks EmsoffLambs for the helpful advice. I have read on your other posts to feed only hay for several days. Would 2 days be your definition of several days?

I would say feed the hay only until the lamb gets to feeling better and slowly introduce it back to grain

that just happened to my lamb a couple of weeks ago and we took the lamb off the grain and fed only hay and gave some b vitamins and probiotics and kept her on hay for about 2 or 3 days then VERY SLOWLY introduced back the grain and I think it was the vit b shot that helped her the most b/c soon after that she was jumping and running to her food and it took about a week and a half but she finally got back on her normal amount of grain and is doing great.

Thanks for your responses. That's great texasgurl. Glad to hear your sheep is eating again. Our sheep was eating 3.5 pounds before going off feed. He has his appetite back today. How much did you start feeding yours again when you reintroduced the feed - 1/2 per day or more? How much did you increase it daily?

I started with 1/2 pound then increased by 1/4 pound I gave her some pepcid, probiotics, b vits for about 5 days until she was on her normal amt of feed.

Did you increase 1/4 pound per day or every other day?

every other day. I am not any kind of pro but this is what someone on here recommended and it worked. My lamb had stopped eating for several days and lost a lot of weight and they really helped me. Now that she is back on feed we are going to be giving her b vits injection every sat and then on Wed we are not injecting it but just putting it down her throat or in her feed to keep that from happening again. it seems to be working so far.

oh also i was thinking last night you might want to get the amount of increase from someone else. my lamb is smaller and was only on 2 pounds of feed per day so the increased amt was most likely told to me based on what she was eating per day. you might wanna try to ask kassiesmom or someone who is more experienced on what amt to increase by if your lamb was on more feed than that. good luck..

1/4 every other day till you reach 4% body weight if you are pushing them and 3% for a slower gain is a general rule of thumb.

I will only say it depends on your feeding ability and feed program. We had a novice have one get sick, completely off feed , ate nothing for 2 day, very little for 3 more Temps have been in high 90s to low 100s, with high humidity(80 to 90 perect). lamb back on full feed 7 days later. We do not have time to take 4 weeks to get one back. Show is in 2.
