| | Probably a stupid question, I know, but I wonder. Why do some lambs have really tight micro curled wool why others have a looser curl pattern?

| | The genes that control wool characteristics. Even within breeds there is genetic variation for wool characteristics. The finer the wool, the tighter the crimp will be. Within the suffolk breed for example, wool will range from 24-33 microns. So that's what you're seeing.

| | More wool swirl, means better wool crimp, more crimp means shorter fiber length required to spin it, so in a spinners mind more wool swirl means higher quality wool. That is how the folks that were spinning at NAILE explained it when Zack asked them that last year.

| | more specifically the actual breed makeup of the sheep will also determine it's wool variation-- by this I mean-- suffolks with hamp in them-- will be a different fleece- dorsets with columbia in them will be yet different.
The super fine crimped, very short, rough looking wool is what is called belly wool. it's worthless, but a Merino fleece is very similar to belly wool.
Friend of mine had a Corriedale buck at Louisville a couple years ago, super fine fleece-- by the end of the week half the people who looked at it called it belly wool, the other half called it extremely fine.
