| | This is a current statement from New holland lamb market. Don't think I can recall seeing a $50 /cwt drop in lamb prices in a one week period.
Sheep and Lambs: When compared to last week's sale, a much heavier supply of
lambs and sheep overwhelmed buyer demand and prices were sharply lower.
Choice and Prime lambs were 40.00-50.00 lower while Choice lambs were mostly
30.00 lower. Slaughter ewes traded 10.00 to 15.00 lower. The quality of the
lamb and sheep offerings didn't have much bearing on the sale price today,
especially toward the end of the sale. Demand was very light throughout.
Slaughter supply consisted of 74 percent lambs, 20 percent slaughter ewes,
and 6 percent miscellaneous stock. All sheep and lambs are destined for non-
traditional markets. All sheep and lambs are sold by the hundred weight, on
actual weights.

| | It wouldn't supprise me one bit to see that here soon. I figure higher show Lamb prices combined with higher feed prices have priced a lot of prospective showers out of the market this year. All those unsold lambs should start hitting the market soon I would guess. Probably not a fun time to be a small breeder.

| | Someone is welcome to correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the show lamb breeder is such a small segment of the sheep industry that it has little bearing on the market price of lambs. Isn't this the time of year that typically sees the lowest prices due to high supply because of the seasonality of sheep breeding?

| Administrator | Correct, although $50 in a week is steep.

| | I sold 21 lambs yesterday that were the same quality as 22 I sold 2 weeks ago at the same market and about the same weight for a thousand dollars less yesterday. Went from 2.20 a pound to 1.70.

| | Wonder if this drop will effect resale value at the fairs?

Sioux Fall Regional this week. The Market was quite fickle, but Of note was anything with dorper or katadin or other hair mix would be no bid on entire lot until all with any mix were sorted off. These are not reported, but brought at least .50 less per hundred than any repoted here. Also the 89 head lot number were a very nice lot of very heavy muscled show lamb genteices, and a bit fleshy, and short docks.( I ws tempted to buy this whole set , and sort off the ewe lambs for planned expansion. and feed out the wethers) Notice the .30 break on them versus a very nice set of 40 head of 87 pound feeders . This set of 40 were very fancy med to large frame speck and black face . very clean fleece, with 2 to 3 inch dock lenght. Buyers at this sale actively discrminate aginst "show dock" and the short docks are pointed out from the auction block. This time any and all "blem" sheep resulted in no bib on entire lot until lots were sorted to buyer spec. Blems would be sold as low a 2 cents a lb and couple of ewes went out with no bid at all. Definitely a weaker undetone to the market, as we contuinue to stuggle with over weight and old fed lambs. Ewes were red hot, and all of the above ewe prices would be considered culls in my opinion. Mostly whiteface, and about 1/2 of offerings going back to country on grass. Higher prices were paid for very fleshy ewes, which is kinda strage for the time of year it is.
At another small barn the night before market and feeders were the same or slighty higher on feeders. But they sell inlots of 5 to 10, so more suited to hobby farm owners wanting a few for grove. and hair and chevoit ewes bringing about 175 per head at this sale.
It appears this week at least "location and timing " were the key to prices.

| | Checked my notes , and note the 19 63 lber that are the high sellers were the wool type sheep Speck and black face at 237.50(149.63 per head)The 14 65 lbers were Black headed dorper cross 65# at 160.(104 per head). It would seem to me in My area, that Hair sheep have not , or will not be competive to the wool sheep. They have been here long enough , that I can't see where there would be any advantage to rasing them I my area of the midwest. The claimed advantage of higher lambing perectage, and more hardy ewes certaily seems more than offset by the lower price recieved at market. All things being equal, with value of wool clip included, It would seem at first impression that you are giving up at least 110 per ewe per year. buy raise hair sheep.
